While the focus of the UEST consortium lies in subsurface energy storage solutions, we also recognise the importance of broader advancements across Austria’s hydrogen value chain. The Green Ammonia Linz (GrAmLi) project represents a major step toward decarbonising industrial processes through large-scale green hydrogen production – and is one of several projects contributing to a climate-neutral future. Our consortium partner ILF Consulting Engineers is playing an active role in this initiative.
Innovating with Large-Scale Electrolysis
The Green Ammonia Linz (GrAmLi) project marks a major step toward reducing industrial CO2 emissions in Austria. Through large-scale electrolysis, the project will produce green ammonia – a sustainable alternative to fossil-based products – at the Linz Chemical Park.
Once operational, this shift is expected to cut emissions by up to 90,000 tonnes of CO2 per year, particularly in the production of ammonia-based goods such as melamine and fertilisers.
A central feature of the project is the integration of a 60 MW proton exchange membrane electrolyser (PEMEL) to generate green hydrogen. This enables the replacement of natural gas in key chemical processes and makes efficient use of renewable electricity. Additionally, by-products like oxygen and waste heat will be utilised on-site, further boosting overall efficiency.
ILF Supports Decarbonisation through Engineering Expertise
ILF Consulting Engineers contributes to this innovative initiative across multiple phases, from early-stage concept development and feasibility studies to front-end engineering design (FEED) and permitting. Drawing on extensive experience in large-scale industrial plant design, ILF helps lay the groundwork for a more climate-neutral industry in Austria.
Why It Matters
Projects like Green Ammonia Linz demonstrate how large-scale hydrogen production can reshape industrial value chains. While UEST focuses on safe, long-term (hydrogen) storage, these upstream developments are vital to creating a resilient and decarbonised hydrogen ecosystem in Austria. By staying engaged with such initiatives, we aim to contribute to a more connected, climate-neutral energy future.
