Austria is stepping up its geothermal ambitions, aiming to deliver around 4 TWh of geothermal energy by 2030 to support the decarbonisation of district heating, industry, and infrastructure. Several major projects are already underway, and UEST member RED Drilling & Services directly contributes to this transition.
One flagship initiative is the ‘deeep’ joint venture, a collaboration between OMV and Wien Energie GmbH. The first plant is currently under development in Aspern, Vienna. While OMV handles subsurface operations (including deep drilling and thermal water extraction), RED supports the effort with specialist geothermal expertise, particularly in drilling and infrastructure integration.
The long-term vision for the joint venture includes up to seven geothermal plants, with the potential to supply 200,000 households in Vienna with sustainable, renewable heat.
