RED’s Drilling Expertise Spotlighted in New York Times

The geothermal expertise of our consortium member RED Drilling & Services caught the attention of The New York Times!

Geothermal energy is becoming a key driver in the clean energy transition. Recently, the New York Times featured Vienna’s pioneering geothermal heating project, where UEST member RED Drilling & Services plays a vital role.

GeothermaL: A clean energy Source for cities

This initiative, led by deeep (a joint venture between OMV and Wien Energie GmbH) uses geothermal reservoirs to provide renewable, stable heating for the city. With approximately 1.7 million gallons of hot water extracted daily, the project currently supplies clean heat to around 20,000 households. This scale of impact showcases geothermal energy’s potential as a dependable alternative to conventional heating, especially in urban areas seeking to reduce carbon emissions.

RED’s expertise in applying proven drilling technology from the oil and gas sector has been has been essential in safely accessing these resources. This collaboration highlights how innovation across industries accelerates climate goals.

Geothermal energy offers a weather-independent heat supply and a reliable, year-round solution for urban energy needs. The expanding project in Vienna, Austria, sets a strong example for cities aiming to decarbonise heating systems.

While RED brings its expertise independently to this pioneering geothermal project, the UEST consortium is proud to count such forward-thinking companies among its members, collectively offering a wide range of services for the energy transition.
